It is winter here in Victoria. Surf and kayaking peak season… so I went along the coast to find some waves.
Even though getting out of the house revealed that it was damn cold and there was not big swell around I was ready to go. My aim was the surf at Jordan River. A beautiful spot along the west coast of Vancouver Island on the way from Victoria to Port Renfrew, the start of the famous West Coast Trail. Just after Jordan River the Juan the Fuca trail starts at China Beach.
When we got there we saw nobody out in the water. Out of the car we learned why. It was freezingly cold. But the small surf rolled in towards the beach in beautiful lines. You couldn’t have stopped me. And I enjoyed the spot a lot. The rivers current stops the waves from breaking in some sections and the swell runs around the point in perfect lines. I surf the Tekno for quite a while working the pocket of the waves and enjoying the long rides. With the small waves it was pure play time.
After a while I had to find out that I wasn’t the only one ready for a play. A harbour seal popped out of the water right in front of me and curiously checked out what I was up to. Over the course of 20 minutes the seal followed me around in the surf taking the waves and riding them with me. It got very close to me and we looked each other in the eye ;-) a few times. It was clearly better equipped than me but we both had a lot of fun.
wow – sounds like an amazing day. reminds me of our californian adventure when we met the dolphins while boogieboarding …
Yeah… it was sort of similar. Just MUCH colder… and of course I missed you funny look when you thought it was a shark instead of a dolphin … hahahah
